Starting in January 2026, Serbia will introduce a new Traffic Safety Law, bringing the strictest penalties and regulations to date. The changes affect almost all aspects of road behavior and are aimed at increasing safety and reducing traffic accidents.
For drivers using rent-a-car vehicles, as well as for everyday road users, understanding these new rules is essential to avoid high fines and additional penalties.
Significantly Higher Fines
Under the new law, low fines of 3,000 and 5,000 RSD will no longer exist.
Offenses previously fined at 3,000 RSD will increase to 10,000 RSD, while those fined at 5,000 RSD will rise to 15,000 RSD.
Violations that previously carried a 10,000 RSD fine will now be punished with 20,000 RSD, and some offenses that were once considered minor may result in fines of up to 50,000 RSD.
Common Violations That Will Be Strictly Penalized
Drivers should pay special attention to the following behaviors:
speeding in urban areas (20–30 km/h over the limit)
not keeping a safe distance from the vehicle ahead
not wearing a seatbelt
using a mobile phone while driving
riding a motorcycle, moped, or electric scooter without a helmet
playing excessively loud music that prevents hearing surrounding traffic
failing to yield to vehicles merging into traffic
Some of these violations may now result in fines of up to 50,000 RSD, along with penalty points.
No More Discounted Fines
One major change is the removal of the discounted fine payment option.
Drivers who repeat the same offense will no longer be allowed to pay a reduced amount, and each repeated violation may result in a 50% increase in the fine.
Zero Tolerance for Alcohol and Drugs
The new law introduces much stricter penalties for driving under the influence of alcohol or psychoactive substances, including additional penalty points.
Penalties will be especially severe if children are present in the vehicle, with higher fines, penalty points, and mandatory protective measures.
When driving a rental vehicle, all traffic fines are the responsibility of the driver. Respecting traffic regulations is not only a legal obligation but also the best way to ensure a safe and stress-free driving experience.
Our advice is simple:
Wear your seatbelt, avoid mobile phone use, respect speed limits, and drive responsibly.
